Hand Analysis: Jack-Ace

The jack ace has quite a few nicknames, incuding Ajax, Apple Jacks, Blackjack, and Hijack, Donkey poker hand, and whatever other regional flourishes might get appended to its set. In general, this is a poker online hand that gets played for raises from opening positions as early as under the gun, though some would say folding from extremely early position in a full ring game would be a safer play. Because the Jack ace is dominated by much more commonly played hands like Ace Queen and Ace King, it can be easy to get into trouble playing ace jack without a gingerness and ability to slow down when necessary. That it also dominates frequently played hands like Ace ten and weaker kickers makes it an interesting between spot, kind of like playing middle pairs. It’s iffy, but can work out in your favor with the right flourish. One should never go broke holding ace jack. It’s just not a casino hand that is worth putting the whole house on, unless you happen to have the nuts. You should open pots, and even call raises against more loose players, but against tighter players be ready to give them credit for those dominating hands if they properly represent them.

Taking Breaks

Every poker online player will find himself at some point in the midst of a rough time, with online poker cards coming, and with luck of the poker gods on or off your side. After a few bad beats, or a long stretch of cards that seem to hate you, it can be difficult to come to the poker table with your right mind in hand. A few losing sessions can quickly turn into more if you find yourself unable to differentiate the good news from the bad. Recognizing yourself in the midst of a truly awful streak is the first step in the matter, but sometimes there is more to the situation than just analysis. There are many crucial points in my poker history where I could look back and say if I’d take a short break from the game instead of trying to push forward while on tilt, I’d have a lot more money in my pocket. There’s never any shame in taking a break from the game when you know you aren’t in your right mind. A few days, even a week or more away from the table can help you get your lost head back clearly, putting distance between you and the bad breaks.

Considering the Overbet

Generally Overbetting is reserved for the river as either a value-bet made to look like a bluff stab, or it really is a bet. But there are other situations where an overbet can be used in order to play defensively. I know, I know, the mantra is offensive poker online, be aggressive etc. But consider these situations for the appropriate useof an overbet.

Top pair on a wet board (i.e. a board where a lot of other hands could connect). You have AA or KK and the board comes something like J-9-10 or it comes out monotone. You likely have the best hand, but drawing hands have really good odds of completing on boards like these. So, you essentially use the overbet here as a defense against drawing hands. If someone flops openended, then you need to make sure you’re not giving them sufficient odds to continue drawing. One way to ensure that is to grossly overbet. Instead of the standard pot sized bet, you make a 3x or 4x pot bet here to ensure that anyone drawing is getting punished to do so.

Another scenario where an overbet may be appropriate is with an Ax hand on a very dry flop. Say you hit your Ace but the other cards that flop are unsuited rags. The turn comes and you don’t know whether or not it’s helpful or harmless to your poker online opponent. In this case, taking your Ace, you overbet here representing two pair. It’s especially convincing when a facecard comes up as many players will put you on two pair with the ace and the facecard pairing.

One final area to consider the overbet is on a monotone board where you have one of that suit, but it’s low. Essentially this is a huge semibluff, but what it does is scare out potentially more dangerous flushy hands. The only hands you’re likely to get called by here are other high suited cards, in which case, you put them on the defensive unless they have the nut flush card or second nuts. This will most likely make a lot of middle pair hands fold and even some weak top pair hands fold if the board is low enough. I know I wouldn’t like to be in position and have someone out of position betting at me when I hold KQ and board comes K-4-8 hearts and I have no hearts at all. Such an overbet there when your poker opponents have holdings like that are bound to pay off in the long run since most of the time they’ll have to fold to fear of the flush.

Avoiding Poker Insomnia

As a online poker player who has long suffered from bouts of insomnia, I can attest that the game of poker can be detrimental to one’s sleeping patterns when not handled with care. Very often, after playing long sessions near the end of the night, I’ve found myself unable to stop reflecting on the hands and situations that I faced throughout that night, thus keeping me away for all hours. The effect is particularly bad after a night when things didn’t go so well. It can wreck your brain, and make moving forward a difficult matter indeed.

One way I’ve found to minimize the sleeping trouble that can come from late night casino online is trying to give myself a period of calm down time between my last session of the night, and the time I plan to be in bed. Giving a little bunker of space to calm down, reflect, and relax before ending up tossing and turning can do a great deal of good before the frustation of insomnia steps in and begins to boil. If possible, playing more often early in the day is also preferable, though being a poker lover, that can be a difficult commitment to make. Instead, practice good time management, and let yourself breathe a little. You’ll sleep a lot better.

90-10 Rules

Let’s talk ring online poker games for a minute, and by that I mean cash poker online games, not tournaments. In good games something elusively obvious should be happening. It’s almost implicit collusion, and it’s so blatantly obvious. It’s money flow I’m talking about here. A general rule of thumb is that 90% of the money flowing around a given table is coming from 2-3 weaker players. In bad games, it’s about equal all around, but if you have it down, then you’ll realize what I’m about to say next. The point of making money in these casino games is to simply isolate these players you know you can out play. Look at it this way. If these fish are giving 90% of the money to the table, then why put in effort for the other 10% the good players are exchanging? Why not just go ahead and extract the maximum amount you can from the bad players. It’s easier money and it’s much less effort. But there’s another part of this rule. Not only are these players giving 90% of the money away, but the chances are pretty good that 90% of the money you’re winning from them is coming from straight ABC poker, not from your well thought out plays and moves. So if you tie these two things together, and you’re looking to make some quick money, doesn’t it make sense to concentrate on the 90% donators and just play solid poker which is netting you 90% of your winnings? Really, no need to sweat the small stuff. What’s 10 bucks to 90 when you can win 90 in a hand, and only 10 in about four?

Blankets on the Couch

After such a hard days work it is so much fun to cuddle up on the couch with your loved one. The two of you can really unwind on that couch while you watch your favorite television shows. If the both of you are strong reality television lovers, then Monday night is packed full of excellent shows. While you cuddle together you want to make sure that you have a blanket to keep the both of you warm. There are many different types of blankets to choose from. All the way from big goose down blankets to small little fleece types. It is important to not get too hot under the blankets so you want to pick something that will keep you warm, but not make you sweat like you are in a sauna. This is especially true after a hard days work because there is nothing worse then creating a sauna like condition when you are trying to cuddle up with your partner. The feel of the blanket should be soft and cuddly, not too much or not too little, just right. This time that the two of you share together is very healthy and productive as it reduces stress and eliminates the tension that is often built up during the day. The couch time with the perfect blanket should be part of every couple’s life, with or without the television involved.

Bubble Play in Poker

The playing for the first spot in the money can be a very harrowing time in a poker game. Last week, I was the chip leader in the bubble situation, to I got to witness the situation firsthand with an outsider’s view, and it was illuminating.

There were four of us left in a poker tournament that paid out to the top three. I was the chip leader and second place was right behind me. The third and fourth place players were just about tied, and both were determined to finish in the money.

The difference was in strategy. Player A on the bubble refused to play a hand, but when he did, he would do it grudgingly and frequently folded after missing the flop, looking miserable the whole time.

Player B was also conservative, but when he decided to play a hand, he played aggressively, raising and going all in when he felt strong.

As you can guess, all the action went toward Player B, and while he was taking more risks, he was raking in more and more poker chips, and as you can guess, he went home with some prize money in his pocket. And he looked like he had a lot more fun doing it.

Poker Techniques: Heads up, Early Lead

I like playing online poker tournament heads up matches, because it’s really a mental game, more so than a card game. In heads up, you always have to keep your opponent guessing. Oddly enough, I usually do this by playing every hand the exact same way. Either min raising every hand, overbetting them, or just limping in. This disguises your hands from your opponent. You have to be careful to recognize their reactions though. If you never get paid off with a min bet at a flop, you’re likely not to make any money with premium hands. This might be ok if you’re able to steal all of the small pots, but once in a while, you’ll need to get paid off on a big hand to take command of the match.

Lately, I have had problems closing out heads up matches. I will get a rather large lead by stealing pots and perhaps getting called when I have a disguised hand, but then I tend to try and push the action for a large pot. When an opponent becomes short stacked heads up, they appear vulnerable, but really, they are just one double up from being even again. And if they do double through you, the blinds are now large enough to dictate action a little heavier than in the beginning of the tournament.

So, at some point, when you have about a 2:1 or even a 3:1 lead, you have to be careful not to unnecessarily put your poker chips at risk. While you might want to take your opponent out by calling his all-in with a small pocket pair, you’re in the right percentage-wise, but you have about the same risk of starting over even stacked. All the work and pressure you’ve been putting on your opponent could be negated by one coinflip.

So, if you’ve gained an early chiplead playing one style, I suggest keeping up that poker strategy and avoiding big-pot preflop gambles in an effort to end your opponent.

Think like a Poker Player: Find Your Outs

In Texas Holdem there are often many way s to win a hand. It’s easy to overlook any other hand besides the home run, but you’re better equipped to handle what the community cards give you if you know exactly what you’re looking for.

For instance, say your poker pocket hand is a Jack-Queen of hearts, and the flop is Ten of hearts, King of spades, and 2 of hearts. Now is the time to figure out how many outs you have, by calculating just how many poker cards in the deck can save you. Now you’ve got an open-ended straight draw, which leaves you looking pretty good, that means that there are four potential Aces and four potential Nines that can leave you with a potential winner, and you’ve also got a decent flush draw, leaving you with another nine Heart cards that can leave you with a flush.

Now you can weigh out your options against what your opponents might be sitting on-an Ace or King-high flush would beat out your Queen high flush, but if a nine or ace comes on the board, the best someone can do it split the pot with you.

When you know how many outs you have, you know what your pocket hand is worth, and you can play it accordingly.
